Womenary Summer 2014!
On the mornings of June 2, 9, and 16, the Womenary will meet at Colonial Hills Baptist Church.
Our Text will be “Is God A Moral Monster?” by Paul Copan
We will spend that time examining the hermeneutics of sex and gender in the Bible – including some of the laws in the Jewish scripture that make us want to scratch our heads:
“If a man seduces a virgin who is not betrothed and lies with her, he shall give the bride-price for her and make her his wife. 17 If her father utterly refuses to give her to him, he shall pay money equal to the bride-price for virgins. [1]
(Ex 22:16)
“When men fight with one another and the wife of the one draws near to rescue her husband from the hand of him who is beating him and puts out her hand and seizes him by the private parts, 12 then you shall cut off her hand. Your eye shall have no pity. [2] (Dt 25:11-12)
or how about Jesus teaching:
“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28 But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell. [3] (Matt 5:27-30)
or Paul teaching that
The husband should give to his wife her conjugal rights, and likewise the wife to her husband. 4 For the wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does. Likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does. 5 Do not deprive one another, except perhaps by agreement for a limited time, that you may devote yourselves to prayer; but then come together again, so that Satan may not tempt you because of your lack of self-control. [4] (I Cor 7:3-5)
We will uncover the cultural contexts for the land during the time of Moses – including the pagan people who surrounded the Israelites. We will discuss the inequality of men and women in biblical times, and much more.
All you ever wanted to know about attempting to understand the biblical attitudes on sex, gender and even marriage – but were afraid to ask.
