Sabbatical (2017) Report IV

Time away with my wife

This turned into quite a story.  Once again, this didn’t go as planned, at all.

First, in case you would read this but don’t know my wife, you need to know that she is a home-person.  As adventurous as she can be, she prefers warmth to adventure, generally. She misses home and children very quickly, and she worries about them when we aren’t there.

She also doesn’t love to travel, especially fly. This isn’t really a phobia, but not far from it.  Flying is just a stress to her and taints any trip with moments that will not be restful… and the goal was “restful”.

So, when I told her we could get away and go pretty much anywhere that we wanted, she chose Brenham, Texas.  As wonderful as it is, it isn’t very exotic… but the goal was rest for both of us and being in her company is very restful to me no matter where it is.

We got a really pretty cabin in the woods, with a comfy bed, a hot tub on the porch, running/walking trails, and a tin roof.  We also planned to have no time-tables… we were just going to visit some fun historical sites, check out a lavender farm, and of course, go to the Blue Bell Creamery… all of which were great!

We slept in, hung out and enjoyed being together for 2 of the four nights we were supposed to be there… The good news was that we got to rest with the sound of rain on the tin roof, and we loved it.  Truly, the most restful condition for me is being alone with my wife.  Sure enough these two days were super restful.

And then Harvey showed up.

harvey25Ginger and I had to bail on Brenham early – and head back home (The church already sent us to Waco to finish out a trip).  It was a bummer but makes for a great story.

Make this a life goal – if you are going to be married, make sure to develop the kind of marriage in which being together with no one else around is the best recipe for rest.

and now, Part V
