Christians in a Pandemic

I wish I had the margin right now to write a more in-depth article about my considerations regarding part of my conversation about this virus.

I do want people to wisely plan.  I hope that people are always wise in preparing to take care of who have been entrusted to them.

I want Christian people, in particular, to remember our promise of not needing to fear death…

AC-How-Can-We-Experience-Resurrection-Power-002.jpg28 And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.– Matt 10:28

14 Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery.– Heb 2:14-15

21 But what fruit were you getting at that time from the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death. 22 But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life. 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.  – Rom 6:23

53 For this perishable body must put on the imperishable, and this mortal body must put on immortality. 54 When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written:

“Death is swallowed up in victory.”

55    “O death, where is your victory?

O death, where is your sting?”

56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. – I Cor 15:53-57

… For a very short survey of the dozens of passages that encourage us to live without the fear of death.  In Christ, death has been defeated.)

… and how that lack of fear has motivated us not merely to wisely plan, but to wisely plan to serve and minister.

The religion of The World has little or nothing to offer people when they remember that 190616-moss-justinian-plague-hero_x9ynib.jpegthey are mortal.  Is this world all that there is?

Our intuition screams out that there is more.  Love is real, not merely a familial preference for genetics; romance is real, not merely a desire to procreate; friendship is real, not merely a pack instinct; the impression that there is more to life than merely bio-chemical reactions – well, this is real, too.  There is more.

The world has no valuable input here.  We do.  Beloved, be prepared mentally, physically, psychologically, to reach into hurting people’s lives – even at the risk of death.  It is our legacy.  Look up how Christians responded during plagues of the past; here is just one article referencing it.  Our current situation may not be nearly as bad, but the 1574902574356.jpegopportunity to love people will still increase in the next weeks.

As our church also develops strategies for how to minister (you can check the website for details as it happens; it is still being developed now), how will you do so in your neighborhood?

  1. I love that picture—Christians running into the inferno of disease and distress; but a reminder such as this in the tides that are rolling now is a waker-upper for me. God help me deny the cowardice of my puny human flesh and instead strap on the boldness of the powerful indwelling Spirit of Christ! Countless compassionate sacrifices generously laid down by centuries of devoted Christian brothers and sisters, after the model of Christ Himself, make me feel personally ashamed but at the same time inspired. The God we Christians worship is worthy of every single sacrifice that can be offered in Jesus’ name. Mine included.

  2. Wise men do wise things not taking into account personal risks. A compromised immune system (which I was unaware of for many years, except for repeated pneumonia, numerous tumors including brain and bone) did not keep God from allowing me to care for incredibly sick/dying people. He has spared my life in car accidents, physical assaults, misdiagnoses, etc. and most recently am in remission with lymphoma. Not compromising another’s health is another matter though to be seriously considered by following strigent sterile guidelines.

He knows our days, the very number of them, as well as the number of hair on our head. He holds the very atoms making up the substance of the air we breathe, our bodies….all miraculously wonderful.

  3. Let us know where we may be needed i have over prepared that there be some for those in need whether it be supplies or just time we can help where it is needed!
